James Naismith (1861­–1939) was a Canadian educator, physician, and Presbyterian minister who became known internationally for his invention of basketball. After studying at McGill College and the Presbyterian College of Montreal, he decided to pursue lay ministry through sport and enrolled in the Young Men’s Christian Association Training School in Springfield, Mass., where he created the game in 1891.

He later earned a medical degree and served as head of physical education at the University of Kansas, among many other achievements. In 1936 he witnessed the debut of basketball as an Olympic sport in Berlin.
